A PLAN to clean up three old Cessnock coalmine sites has received cautious backing from the city council.
The council expressed environmental and public safety concerns last night when endorsing trucking routes to allow the Aberdare East, Neath and Richmond Main East pits to be cleared.Hunter Enviro-Mining has applied to State Planning Minister Frank Sartor to collect almost 2.9 million tonnes of coal waste from the mines and wash it at Kearsley.Kearsley and Neath residents have opposed the plan, because of the truck movements and potential dust and noise impacts on Kearsley Public School and residential areas. The proposal would involve up to 10 trucks an hour, during daylight, five days a week for several years.
